Gonubie is nestled between the Gonubie River and the Indian Ocean. The name Gonubie is derived from the Xhosa word “qunube” which means wild bramble berries. Gonubie was originally an isolated seaside resort which has become a thriving centre and suburb of East London popular for it weather and coastline.
