An oasis in the Karoo, Aberdeen is a charming country town that was built on a large aquifer set in the Camdoo Mountain Range. Aberdeen is well known for its stock farming. The mutton produced in this region is regarded as the best in the world. It is an architectural conservation area in the Karoo where visitors to the area are able to see the Victorian, Georgian, Karoo, German, Gothic, Russian and Flemish architecure of the town by means of walking tours. Ostrich baron’s houses dating back to the time of the ostrich feather boom, gargoyles on roofs and oddly placed turrets form part of the eccentric buildings on display. The Dutch Reformed Church’s spire is 45cm off centre and is the tallest in South Africa. Farmstays and hunting are popular and the area.
