Butterworth is the oldest town in the Transkei and has several places of interest which include the sites associated with the wars of Resistance, the 85m high Butterworth River Cascades and the Bawa Falls (High Executioner) which have a sheer drop of 110m where criminals were once pushed to their death. Butterworth is near Collywobbles which consists of a complicated series of twists, meanders and turns of the Mbashe River. Spring is the best time to view this strange and bizarre landscape. At the mouth of the river there is a lighthouse and a resort with a hotel. The Collywobbles also is also home to the endangered Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) and the colony can be viewed without disturbing it. Butterworth is en route to the southern Wild Coast resorts and the Dwesa Cebe Nature Reserves.
