Johannesburg, nicknamed Egoli (meaning city of gold), is the largest city in Southern Africa. It is one of the top 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world. Attractions and Things To Do in Johannesburg The Adler Museum of the History The museum portrays the history of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in South Africa. The Pharmacy Museum Located in Melrose, the museum is home to a large variety of medicines, including more than 670 traditional medicines that have been collected throughout South Africa. The Nelson Mandela Bridge The cable-stayed bridge measuring 295 m-long, can accommodate over 3 000 vehicles per hour. Museum Africa Depicts life in South Africa from the Stone Age to the Nuclear Age and beyond. The Museum is next to the Market theatre. The Market Theatre complex Comprising of 3 theaters, an art gallery, restaurants and pubs. Mahatma Gandhi Statue A bronze statue of resistance activist, Mahatma Gandhi. Located in city center. Lesedi Cultural Village A multi cultural village set in the bushveld, visitors are given the opportunity to meet families of different tribes. Located just North of Johannesburg. The Phumanegna Zulu Kraal Home to traditional Zulu people living and working there. Melville Koppies in Johannesburg was once the site of a Stone Age African village and iron-smelting works. Flora includes 80% of the species recorded on the Witwatersrand. Open to thepublic from Setember to April. Gold Reef City A theme park featuring roller coaster rides as well as an underground visit to the gold mine is an interesting option. The Apartheid Museum The Apartheid Museum is truly a moving experience. Open Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 5pm. Entrance fee is R25 for adults, R12 for pensioners and students. Constitution Hill A impressive building housing South Africa's Constitutional Court. Inmates imprisoned at these facilities included Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Luthuli, and the only woman to be executed in Sout Africa’s History, Daisy de Melker Santarama Miniland and Entertainment World Visitors can view models of South Africa's most popular beacons, such as Robben Island, Johannesburg International Airport, East London Harbour, the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, and the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The South African Museum of Military History Home to an impressive collection of weaponry and uniforms from the two world wars. Zoo Lake A large park surrounding Zoo Lake, where jazz concerts, rowing boats for hire, a tea garden and a restaurant are available. Soweto A popular tourist destination.
