The charming little town of Cullinan is located only an hour away from Johannesburg. The town is named after Thomas Cullinan who discovered the immense diamond pipe in the area back in 1902. In 1905 the largest diamond ever found in the world was found here. The stone with a mass of 3106 carats was purchased by the Transvaal government and given to King Edward VII. It was then split into the 530 carat Star of Africa, which is set in the scepter of crown jewels; the 317 carat Lesser Star of Africa, which is set in the Imperial State Crown of the Crown Jewels; 7 other gems worn by the Royal Family; and 96 lesser gems. Cullinan offering a combination of history, heritage, nature and wildlife is the perfect weekend getaway destination.
