Heidelburg  
 


Heidelberg began as a trading station built in 1862 by a German named HJ Uekermann. The town was built around the store and named after Uekermann's mother. Heidelberg is a typical rural Victorian town, with many of its buildings dating back to the period between 1890 -1910.

Concentration Camp Cemetery
Where many of the graves of woman and children who died during the Second War of Independence can be viewed.

Heidelberg Transport Museum
Opened in 1975.

Klipkerk
Klipkerk in the Afrikaans language means 'stonechurch', the corner of this stunning sandstone church was laid in 1890, 25 years after the congregation was founded.

AG Visser House
Dr AG Visser a well known early Afrikaans poet lived and practised as the local doctor in this house. Located on Van der Westhuizen Street.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve
The reserve is home to a wide range of plants, birds and animal species. Clearly marked self-guiding hiking are available. There are also picnic and barbeque facilities all over the reserve.

Concentration Camp Cemetery
Where the graves of woman and children who died during the Second War of Independence lie.

The old Jail
Built in 1888, the jail was first used as a hospital and home for the underprivileged. Since 1963, when a new jail was built, the old building has been standing empty. The old jail is being restored.

Bakoond
The Boers, during the second War of Independence, built a “bakoond” over the water fountain keeping it hidden from British forces. This is how they safe-guarded their water supply.

Heidelberg Kloof
The beautiful Heidelberg Kloof with its picnic spots and excellent swimming facilities attract thousands of day visitors.

Diepkloof Farm Museum
Located 20km on the Nigel road there is an old restored farmhouse, built in 1850.
