Vanderbijlpark

The South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation began building a steel works close to the Vaal River in 1941. A 118 hectare site next to the Vaal River was selected to accommodate its employees and named Vanderbijlpark. The town is named after Dr. H.J. van der Bijl, then chairman of the iron and Steel Corporation.
Although the town is primarily an industrial center, it is surprisingly beautiful with its more than half a million trees planted to shade the streets, and its many parks. Vanderbijlpark is home to one of the most cosmopolitan communities in the country.
