The name Roodepoort means ‘red valley’ in the Afrikaans language, it gets its name from the red soil in the area. Roodepoort started out as an untidy sprawl of miners tents and shacks around one of the first viable gold mines of the witwatersrand. Today it is a city; home to over 200 000 people, and is mostly residential with some industry and small businesses.
