Kokstad

Kokstad is named after Adam Kok, the Griqua chief who successfully led his people to their ‘promised land’. Treaties drawn up between Britain and the Orange Free State Republic cost them their land around Philippolis in the Orange Free State. They were promised ‘No-Mans-Land’ between Transkei and Natal as compensation. In 1861 Adam Kok and 2 000 Griquas trekked eastwards and reached what later became known as Griqualand East and named their centre Kokstad after their chief. The district of Kokstad is a centre for diary products. Kokstad is also renowned for cattle ranching and horse breeding. Polo matches and gymkhanas are popular social events.
