Dundee

Peter Smith named his farm Dundee after his birthplace in Scotland. In 1880 a geological survey confirmed that coal could be mined in a 3 000km2 area of northern Natal - Dundee had particularly rich deposits of coal. Peter Smith formed the Dundee Coal and Estate Company and laid out a town on Dundee to serve as a centre for several mines. In 1890 a branch railway line from Glencoe to Dundee was built, soon it grew to become an important trading and railway centre. The town’s main agricultural activities include cattle and sheep farming and the cultivation of maize.
