| Estcourt developed round a fort that was built in 1847 to protect the fording place over the Bushman River. Trading stores, inns and blacksmith shops were soon opened and on 7 January 1848 a village was laid out at the ford. The town was renamed Estcourt in 1863 in honour of the English parliamentarian, Thomas Estcourt who promoted immigration to natal. Estcourt has many processing and manufacturing industries (meat, dairy, coffee, animal feeds, textiles, plastics, nylon goods, softboard and hard board) and is well known for its processed meat throughout South Africa.
