Howick |
||
| A commercial centre for timber plantations including cattle and dairy farming. A viewing site, tea-room and caravan site is located on the banks of the river above the Howick waterfalls. Howick developed around the fording place above the 95m falls which was known to the Africans as kwaNogqaza - the ‘place of the tall one’. The British colonial secretary, Earl Grey, was the first inhabitant to the area. He was a hotel keeper and also provided a ferry service. The town and the falls were named after his Northumberland home. The Midmar Dam built on the Mgeni River is a popular recreational spot for watersport enthusiasts and hosts the annual Midmar Mile.
