Ladysmith

In 1847 Voortrekkers settled in the Klip River (‘stone river’) Valley and formed an independent republic, the Klip River Republic. In 1850 the British government annexed the area and established an administrative centre, Ladysmith, for the Klip River District. Ladysmith was under siege for 120 days (2 November 1899 – 28 February 1900) during the Anglo-Boer War. Ladysmith is a busy junction - the road from Durban to the interior diverges into the Free State and Gauteng Highways. Horses are bred in the district and mixed farming is practised in the area. Founded on 20 June 1850 and named after Lady Juana (Maria de los Dolores de Leon) Smith a well known Spanish born beauty and wife of the governor of the Cape, Sir Harry Smith.
