Pietermaritzburg, a Voortrekker town founded in 1838 and named after two famous Voortrekker leaders namely, Piet Ritief and Gert Maritz. The famous Comrades Marathon is an annual event (held in May/June) that is run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Pietermaritzburg is the starting point for the annual Duzi canoe marathon. Pietermaritzburg boasts various museums, including the Voortrekker Museum, the Natal Museum and the Natal Steam Railway Museum, which offers steam-train rides on the second Sunday of every month. The Tatham Art Gallery is also extremely popular.
