Kwadukuza |

| Shaka, the famous Zulu chief established a new settlement for his Zulu nation and called it, Kwadukuza (‘place of the lost person’) because of the complex labyrinth of huts. On 22 September 1828, Shaka was murdered by his two half brothers, Dingane (his successor) and Mhlangana. Shaka was buried wrapped in an ox hide in an empty grain storage pit. Dingane abandoned Kwadukuza and it fell to ruins. The town of Stanger was founded on the site in 1873 and named after the surveyor-general of Natal, William Stanger – it has recently changed its name to Kwadukuza in honour of Shaka. Kwadukuza is the commercial centre for one of South Africa’s most extensive sugar growing industries.
