Richards Bay

The town of Richards Bay developed around the 3 000ha saltwater lagoon. The lagoon was used as a harbour during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Richards Bay was named after Frederick Richards, the commodore of the Cape station of the Royal Navy, who sailed into the bay to land supplies for the British Army. In the 1960’s it was decided that the lagoon would be developed into a deep-water port to handle bulk cargo. It was completed in 1976 and is South Africa’s largest port capable of handling vessels of up to 200 000tons. Titanium is mined from the sands of the bay.
