Lephalale (Ellisras)

 
 


Lephalale is situated on the Mokolo Dam about 60 km from the Botswana border and the Stockpoort Border Post. Tourists must be careful of Hippos and crocodiles which from time to time can be spotted in the Mokolo Dam. This flourishing Waterberg town is home to about 20 000 people. The breathtaking landscape together with the abundance of game, provide for the persfect holiday destination. Being a malaria free area is an added bonus for tourists who visit. Lephalale forms part of the world-renowned Waterberg Savannah Biosphere. Besides tourism, coal mining is the economic mainstay of the town. The Matimba Power Station in Lephalale is the biggest drycooled power station in the world. One can arrange sightseeing trips to the power station.

D’Nyala Nature Reserve
Only 10 km out of town on the new Vaalwater road. A 35-km game-viewing route. There are two bird hides on the route which the birdwatchers are sure to enjoy. There is also a hiking trail as well as a picnic area.

Spreeuwal, Geelhoutskoof where one can take in the natural beauty of the country side.

Rock Art
There are several caves in the area that yield fascinating examples of San rock art.

Golf
The Mogol Sports Club offers an attractive 18-hole championship golf course.

Fishing
The Fish Eagle Fishing Route has all kinds of good fishing spots. There are also various accommodation facilities on offer, be advised that booking is essential.

Mokolo Dam
The Mokolo Dam is 50 km from Lephalale on the Thabazimbi road (R510). There are excellent opportunities for boating and fishing. Please be warned that hippos and crocodiles occur in the dam. There is a picnic area, as well as facilities for those who want to stay over night

Ellisras Bushveld Festival
The three-day Festival in July. The festival includes cattle shows, a game auction, horse jumping, dog shows, agricultural activities, a three-day battle for the best 4x4 competition, a game farms expo, hunting opportunities, bird- and tree-identification competitions, traditional South African foods, a beer tent and huge camp fires.
