The
steelworks of Pretoria draw much of their raw material from Thabazimbi,
which literally means ‘mountain of iron’
in the Tswana language . Rugged mountains looming abruptly from a bush
covered plain are the spectacular setting for the town which has grown
up around it. The mine shaft-with a lift that holds 100 men-is one of
the largest in Africa. The red soil speaks of the enormous treasure
of iron and the ore trains are on the move day and night. The surrounding
area is a ranching area, particulary cattle ranching and game farming.
The region is becoming a popular destination for eco-tourism and nature
lovers.
