Makado lies on the edge of the Zoutpansberg Range within close proximity to Zimbabwe and the Kruger National Park. Attractions and Things To Do in Makhado Schoemansdal Open-air Museum Portrays the way of life of the early pioneers. Ben Lavin Nature Reserve A reserve offering a little bit of everything: beautiful views, archeological sites dating back to 1250 AD, 160 tree species, 250 bird species, 50 species of animal and quite a few mountain bike trails. The Indigenous Tree Sanctuary Features 145 indigenous trees of the region and several Voortrekker graves Located at the intersection of the N1 and Trichardt. Albasini and Middle Letaba Dams Where one can enjoy relaxing in the sun by the water. Fishing The overflow of the Twin Dams of the Nwanedi Reserve offers scenic beauty and excellent fishing. Fort Hendrina A mobile fort, next to the municipal library, used in the 1880s during the Anglo-Boer War Langjan Nature Reserve: Given its red sand dunes and Kalahari veld, this reserve was proclaimed to provide sanctuary for the last remaining herd of gemsbok in the province. Medike Located in the Sand River Gorge is home to a series of San rock artwork including murals and etching. The Albasini Dam The dam offers boating and angling, it is 25 km from Makhado on the Levubu Road Hanklip Picnic Site and Forest A great birdwatching site with lots of trails leading through stunning countryside boasting trees of worldwide dendrological interest. Memorial Gardens Gardens honouring victims of various local and international conflicts. Located North of the Civic center area. Schoemansdal Museum: 15km west of town, commemorating the pioneering history of the area and the country as a whole. The nearby cemetry includes the grave of the Voortekker leader Andries Potgieter. The Arts and Craft Route In the Elim area where sisal mats, candles, silk-screen prints, batik articles, traditional Venda pots and wood carvings are made by locals Arts and Crafts There are several places to purchase arts and crafts in the area: Mashamba Potters sell traditional Venda pottery.
