Thohoyandu  
 


Thohoyandou is named after one of the former chiefs; it means ‘the head of the elephant’. The town today is the commercial, administrative and legislative center of the VhaVenda community. The are is also rich in agriculture, they produce bananas, sub-tropical fruits, maize and tobacco. They also have coffee and tea plantaions on the higher slopes.
Neat little villages surround Thohoyandou. The VhaVenda culture is spirit filled and one can see this through their dances, woodcarvings, pottery and the decoration of their buildings. The VhaVenda people are amazing artists, their original works are collected worldwide.
Sightseeing in Venda is closely linked to the legends and myths of the VhaVenda people.

Thathe Vondwe Forest
The Thathe Vondwe Forest is a stunning indigenous forest that includes the sacred burial ground of chiefs of the Thathe clan.

Phiphidi Falls and Gbukhuvho Pool
Are believed to be the home of water sprites that foster good relationships with the ancestral spirits. One can reach the fall via the R523 between Sibasa and the tea plantations.

Lwamondo Hill
where a troupe of sacred baboons can be found, it is believed that they have kept watch over the Lwamondo through the ages. Lwamondo is located on the R524 between Tshakuma and Shayandima,

The Largest Baobab in The Country
It has a girth of 43 m and is near to the near the Sagole Spa

Nwanedi National Park
The Park is well stocked, situated 75 km north of Thohoyandou on the R525.

Mphaphuli Cycad Reserve
Is definitely worth visiting, it is located on the Mutale Road near the Makonde Village, east of Thohoyandou.

Dzata Ruins and Museum of the Drum
The ruins of the royal kraal of the Vha-Venda kings. The ruins date as far back as 1400 AD

Thulamela
A historical site in the Kruger National Park where evidence was found indicating the smelting of gold around 1300AD.

The Nzhelele Dam and Nature Reserve
Is located of the R523 towards Makhado

The Sagole Spa and Village
There is a natural hot spring that attracts many visitors to the area

Tshikovha
Is a local herbalist and spiritualist known internationally, visitations by arrangement.

Tshakhuma Village
Where visitors can experience a unique look at the rich African culture, with Venda sculptures and craftspeople trading. Many traditional dancing groups uphold the traditional culture of the VhaVenda and Xitsonga. One must make arrangements through the Zoutpansberg Tourism to see these dances.
