Phalaborwa is also known as the ‘the town of two summers’
because of its year round beautiful weather. The city is located practically
on the doorstep of the world famous Kruger National Park. Tourism and
wildlife play a big role in the life of the town. The town is neatly
laid out with shopping malls (featuring all the major chain stores),
and modern banking facilities. Phalaborwa is also home of the famous
African marula tree and Amarula Cream Liqueur.
Attractions and Things To Do in Phalaborwa The Hans Merensky Country Club The Hans Merensky Country Club has brilliant sports facilities: air conditioned squash courts, floodlit tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and an angling dam. The golf course is highly acclaimed and hosts two major golf tournaments every year. The Kruger Park stretches along the entire length of the club’s eastern boundary which results in golfers and animals often having to share the greens and fairways Microlight flights Are a fantastic way of exploring the beauty of the surrounding areas and viewing game at the same time. Boat Safari A boat safari down the Olifants River is always fun. It is a three-hour game-viewing tour. The Letaba Ranch Nature Reserve Offers a wonderful bush experience and magnificent sightings of elephant and buffalo. 4x4 vehicles are recommended on this rugged terrain. Walking Safaris The Kruger National Park offers walking safaris which last for about 3 to 4 hours Horse Trails Are available through the Balule Game Reserve along the Olifants River. Phalaborwa’s Open Cast Mine Almost 2 km wide and 450 m deep, it is the widest manmade hole in Africa. Mine tours are available but must be booked in advance. Foskor Mine Museum Located in the first house built in Phalaborwa, the museum provides the history on mining and ancestral living in the area. The Foskor Development Trust Run a training centre with an outlet at the Phalaborwa gate encouraging entrepreneurs selling woven carpets, pottery, woodcarvings, sheet metal work, beadwork, screen-printed fabric and other articles. Cultural tours Phalaborwa cultural tours are available and include local villages, the Humulani Mocambique refugee village. Game Farms, Game Sanctuaries and Nature Reserves Are abundant in the area, tourists and visitors are never more than a half hour drive away Sealene Kop and Kgopolwe Kop Are burial spots for BaPhalaborwa chiefs and therefore have great cultural significance. |
