The Beautiful town of Tzaneen was established in 1912, and lies at the foot of the Wolkberg mountains. It was named after the resident tribe, the Tzaneng. It is the second largest town in Limpopo and is a rich agricultural area. Most of the country’s mangos, paw-paws, avocado pears, tea and coffee come from Tzaneen. With all the attractions the area has to offer it is no wander Tzaneen has become a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors.

Abseiling
Abseiling in the Magoebaskloof area is run by highly qualified instructors. A very popular outdoor sport.

Caving
More and more people are discovering the excitement of exploring caves, in the Wolkberg Mountains.

Horse riding
Horse riding is a fantastic way to enjoy the beauty of the local fauna and flora.

Summer is the best birding season as all the migrants are in the area.

Fly Fishing in the Mountains
Experience the excitement of fly fishing in the unexplored waters of the Broederstroom River. All anglers over the age of 16 require a Provincial Fishing License.

Carp Fishing
In the Tzaneen dam it is reported that the carp size is between 20 and 28 kg, perhaps the most challenging dam to catch the big one. All anglers over the age of 16 require a Provincial Fishing License.

Trout Fishing
The Ebenezer Dam is a nice Trout fishing spot. The Broederstroom River in the Magoebaskloof Mountains is another popular trout fishing spot. Enjoy the thrill of fishing in the unexplored rivers of this area. All anglers over the age of 16 require a Provincial Fishing License.

The Kruger National Park
Phalaborwa gate, one of the entrances to the world famous Kruger National park lies 89km east of Tzaneen

Nature Reserves and Hiking Trails:

WOLKBERG WILDERNESS RESERVE. Situated 45km from Tzaneen on the R528

LEKGALAMEETSE NATURE RESERVE. Located on the R36 - 44km from Tzaneen towards Trichardsdal. This area incorporates The Downs Nature Reserve. Well known for its rare butterflies, many of which are yet to be classified

HANS MERENSKY NATURE RESERVE. The reserve is open daily throughout the year and is most popular in winter when temperatures are lower and game is easier to spot.

MODJADJI NATURE RESERVE.
One of the largest reserves of a single species of cycad in the world. A network of hiking trails, lasting about 4 hours, picnic area and toilet facilities are available.

WOODBUSH FOREST/DOKELWA TRAIL. The Dokelwa and Grootbosche hiking trails lead through plantations of exotic pine trees and through Grootbosche the largest indigenous forests in Limpopo.

STATE FOREST, NEW AGATHA TZANEEN. Only11 km from Tzaneen on the Agatha Road. The Rooikat trai, with picnic spots and swimming pools in the river, will take you on a circular forest route.

LESODI TRAIL. Is off the R71 near Magoebaskloof Hotel. 1 and 2 hour walks through the forest are available.

DIE AKKERS.
In the Agatha Forest, offer a beautiful picnic area under Oak Trees with a stream.

CHEERIO GARDENS.
Hectares of gardens offer visitors beautiful, wheelchair-friendly walks that lead you through rows of azaleas, cherry blossoms and many more colourful plants.

DEBENGENI WATERFALLS.
One of the most popular picninc sites. Take the R71 from Tzaneen to Magoebaskloof. Turn right to Woodbush/ Debegeni Waterfalls.

DUIWELSKLOOF WATERFALL & PICNIC SITE.
Wind your way threw Modjadjiskloof, past the hospital to the outskirts of the town, follow sign boards.

Situated on the R71 between Tzaneen and Magoebaskloof

MODJADJI CYCAD RESERVE.
This beautiful picnic area offers ablution facilities in the heart of the Cycad Reserve.

TZANEEN DAM NATURE RESERVE.
Shaded sites overlooking the dam with braai facilities and ablution blocks.
