Machadodorp, named after Joachim Machado was laid out on the farm called Geluk which means happiness and founded in 1894. Joachim Machado was the Portuguese engineer who surveyed the railway route between Pretoria nad Delagoa Bay.
Machadodorp is a cattle and sheep farming town that has excellent trout fishing waters and thermal sulphur springs that have been developed into a health resort. Emthonjeni is an interesting township that is safe to visit. Local arts and crafts can be bought from the Craft Market that is held on the last Saturday of each month at the Riverside Fly Fishing Park.
