Piet Ritief

Piet Retief was named in honour of the Voortrekker leader who had tried to negotiate land from the Zulu king Dingane. He and his men were murdered by the Zulus on 6 February 1838 under the pretence of a peaceful farewell dance ceremony. Piet Rietief has enormous wattle and timber plantations. German speaking residents and farmers (who are descendants of the 19th centuary) make up a large part of the community. The main crops are tobacco, sugarcane and citrus fruit.
