Balfour

Balfour is a small coal mining and maize farming town. Balfour was established on the farm Vlakfontein (‘shallow spring’) and founded on 16 February 1898 as McHattiesburg after the owner Frederick McHattie. It was in June 1905 that Balfour was renamed in honour of Arthur Balfour, the British Prime minister, who made a speech from the local train station platform.
