Established in 1870 when the discovery of diamonds was made on the banks of the Vaal River. Christiana was named after the only daughter of the president at the time (Andries Pretorius). Today only a few diamonds remain in the area, there are a small number of diggers that still wash and pan the gravel near the town. Christiana is a rich agricultural area producing wool, maize, groundnuts, cotton, sorghum, beef and mutton. Attractions and Things To Do in Christiana Diggers Museum Where one can view authentic digging equipment used and old photographs telling the story of mining in Chritiana in the early days. San Bushman Rock Art Can be viewed at Stowlands, 6km from Chritiana. Aventura Vaal Spa Located 3km north of Christiana on the banks of the Vaal River. The resort offers great fishing spots and a game reserve featuring various animals including rhino and giraffe. |
