| Taung, means "place of the lion" and is named after the Bataung chief, Tau, who made his headquarters here in the 18th centaury. Taung is best known as the site where the fossilized skull of an early hominid child was found in 1924, classified as Australopithecus africanus, meaning the southern ape of Africa. The skull is estimated to be some 2.5 million years old. This skull is perhaps one of the most famous fossils ever discovered, and is one of the world’s most important archaelogical discoveries. Attractions and Things To Do in Taung Taung Skull Heritage Site A monument to the discovery of the Taung skull has been erected at this historic site. Blue Pools Located at the Buxton quarry, Taung Heritage Site. The beautiful valley with caves, streams and rock pools make it a popular hiking, picnicking and abseiling spot. There are also barbecue/braai facilities available along the spring. Taung Dam A lovely picnic spot on the Kolong River only 17km from Taung. Mmabana Cultural Centre Where one can purchase arts and crafts made by locals. Dinkwaneng Site Where San Bushman engravings can be seen. Located roughly 20km from Taung. Boipelo Game Reserve A 150 hectare reserve forms part of the Tusk hotel complex. The reserve is home to seven different species of wildlife and over 100 bird species. Hiking and mountain biking trails are on offer. |
