Groot Marico

 
 


The town of Groot Marico has a captivating Wild West atmosphere. It gets its name from the Groot Marico River and is known for its unmistakably African bushveld. Filled with historical charm and atmosphere, it is the ideal getaway destination for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
The valley of the Groot Marico is also the setting for many of the tales of Charles Bosman, the famous South African author who evolved a unique style of Afrikaans flavored English in books such as ‘Mafikeng Road’.



Attractions and Things to do in Groot Marico

Rock Art
Paintings by early San and Bushmen people can be viewed at the Naauwpoort farm.

Mampoer Farms
Groot-Marico became famous for a special drink called Mampoer, also known as ‘moonshine’. This literally breathtaking strong spirit is distilled from fruit. They check that the Mampoer is strong enough by putting a lit match to it, if it does not burst into flames it is not strong enough.

The Art Factory
Is a small shop situated in Groot Marico, it is filled with arts and crafts from the local people.

Anglo Boer War Sites
Groot-Marico was one of the places where Boers and British were fighting during the 1899 - 1902 war. Kleinfontein, Bokkraal and Wonderfontein were some of the places battles took place. There is a small cemetery on the Wonderfontein farm where some British Soldiers were buried.

Kortkloof Tswana Village
Here you can eat traditional food and enjoy a trip on the donkey-drawn cart.

The Marico Bushveld Dam
The eye is a fountain and is 17 metres deep. It is a favourite spot for Scuba diving and camping, with its extremely clear water.

Hiking Trails
There are the Langkloof and Enzelsberg hiking trails.
