The discovery of gold in 1886 drew many prospectors to Klerksdorp, ending the rural tranquility of the town. Today, Klerksdorp is a major producer of gold and uranium in the North West Province. It is also an important farming center known for its fine herds of Sussex cattle. Important crops are maize, sorgum sunflower seeds and groundnuts. Attractions and Things To Do in Klerksdorp Goudkoppie Old mining shafts dating all the way back to the 18th century, and rock inscriptions of Anglo-Boer War British regiments Jack Scott House An imported tin house from Britain and used to the home of Jack Scott, the father of modern-day mining in the area. Klerksdorp Mine Tours Upon request, tours can be arranged. Klerksdorp Museum The museum offers Peach Mampoer & Soet Blits liqueurs. Old Cemetry A cemetry for British soldiers and Boer women and children who died during the Anglo Boer War of 1899 - 1902. Ou Dorp Hiking Trail An 11km walk through the old part of town, passing the early homes of Voortrekker families. One can also see remains of pre-historic Tswana kraals can. Rock Engravings Located on the farm Bosworth and now preserved as a national monument. Stock Exchange Building Built in 1888 during the gold rush. Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve A small reserve including rhino and 150 bird specie. The reserve is located 13km north of Klerksdorp. Flyfishing Fly fishing is a growing sport in the area.
