Lichtenburg, established in 1893, means ‘town of light’. President Thomas Burger gave the town its name in hopes that it would become a beacon of success. The president’s dream came true, between 1925 and 1930, when the rural area of Lichtenburg experienced the greatest diamond rush of all time. Today the town is modern and attractive and is a rich agricultural producing mainly maize, sunflower seeds, groundnuts, beef and mutton. Attractions and Things To Do in Lichtenburg The Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre The Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre is a project of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa. Experience a night drive through the centre under the guidance of an experienced guide. Booking is advised. Vulture Restaurant Where one can see these vultures at close range, as food is put out regularly for them. Hennie Potgieter's Equestrian Statue Hennie Potgieter's huge equestrian statue of the great Boer general Koos de la Rey, who farmed near Lichtenburg, was unveiled in the town in 1965. |
