Mafikeng

 
 


Mafikeng is the capital of the North West Province and is nicknamed “The City of Goodwill". Through its many sieges, battles and bloodshed in the past, the town has not always lived up to its nickname. Today Mafikeng is a peaceful town and is rapidly expanding.
The town with its fascinating history is situated on the border of Botswana making it the perfect gate-way to the rest of Africa via fantastic road and rail networks as well as a world-class airport.

The Local Creamery
The local creamery is one of the largest in the country. .

Mafikeng Museum
Visit the museum to view the extensive ethnographic and Anglo-Boer War exhibits.

Kanon Kopje
Located south east of Mafikeng, is a fort built during the Warren Expedition of 1885.

Barolong and Kgosi Besele Montshoia Monuments
Nearby the tribal meeting place (Kgotlathe) of Chief Montshoia of the Barolong Boora Tshidi. There is a monument honoring the Barolong who died during the Mafikeng siege next to it is another recognizing Kgosi Besele Montshoia. Close to that is the Mafikeng Siege Cemetery.

Sol Plaatje sites
Sol Plaatje was a famous South African politician, journalist, campaigner for human rights, novelist & translator, to Mafikeng at the time of the siege. Historic sites include his residence, his newspaper office and printing works.

Mafikeng Game Reserve
Home to a wide variety of game and is one of the principal breeding parks for White Rhino.

Manyane Game Lodge
Offer a lion enclosure and crocodile camp.

Botsalano Game Reserve
Only 30 km west of the city

Lotlamoreng Cultural Reserve and Montshiwua Dam
A cultural village, recreational area and a waterfowl sanctuary can be found. Located on the south of the road to Vryburg.

Modimola Dam
An angling and picnicking site.

The Mmabana Cultural Centre
Promotes music and many arts through practical workshops and exhibitions.

Wondergat
An underwater network of caves used mainly for diving instruction.
