Potchefstroom

 
 

Founded on the banks of the Mooi River in 1838 it was the first town and capital of the former Transvaal Republic. Today Potchefstroom is a leading city in the province as well as in the country. The town is home to South Africa's only chalk factory and is one of the largest organ factories in the country. The lively city of Potchefstroom offers many national monuments, a respected university, a rich agricultural economy and great hospitality.

Andrew Carnegie Library
Located in Potgieter Street and was declared a national monument

City Hall
Featuring a clockwork and bells manufactured in the Netherlands, also declared a national monument

Angling
Boskop Dam is a popular fishing and picnic site, about 25 km north of Potchefstroom

National Monuments
Architectural buildings dating back to the 1850's.
Old Gunpowder House, the Old Police Station Building, the Kruger Kraal Opstal, the Heimat building of the University of Potchefstroom and the Old Magistrates Office.

Churches
One of the oldest Reformed Churches in South Africa (1891), with its beautiful stained glass windows, is located in town.

Goetz Fleishack Museum
The only example left of the town houses that were in Market Square in the 1850's

Hiking Trails
Potchefstroom is a favourite hiking destination.

North West Command
It is one of the largest army bases in the country.

Oak Avenue
Oak Avenue is a 6,84km road lined with oak trees that were planted in 1910. Today it is a national monument.

Old Fort, Museum and Cemetery
Where remains of an old fort can be found

OPM-Prozesky Bird Sanctuary

Potchefstroom Museum
An interesting arts, culture and history museum, located in the home of President Pretorius, the first state president of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek.

Offer many hiking trails set in the stunning Vredefort Dome.

Yachting
Boskop Dam is a popular spot for yachting enthusiasts, about 25 km north of Potchefstroom
