Swartruggens is a quaint farming town and is named after the black ridges (hills) that surround it.

African Game and Art
It is an Ostrich Farm, offering tours, rides and has a great curio shop.

Diamond Mines
In 1932 diamonds were discovered just north of the town. Today there are still a few mines and small diamond diggings that are operational.

Elands River Battlefield and Graves
A battle took place here during the Anglo-Boer War between 1899-1902.

Madikwe Game Reserve
The Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big 5 and is one of South Africas largest game reserves. Bordering Botswana, it is famous for its major game relocation program (Operation Phoenix).
