In the early 1800’s Hanover was considered part of the Graaff-Reinet district and was known as Bo-Zeekoeirivier. As the farming community grew in area, the need for a new community centre also grew. In 1854 an 8 656ha farm called Petrusvallei, was purchased by the Dutch Reformed church. The former owner asked that the proposed town be named Hanover after the German city his ancestors came from. Hanover is well known for its handmade leather and sheepskin products. Attractions and Things To Do in Hanover Anglican Church Built in 1895, it is still in use, and has been declared a national monument. Cenotaph A memorial for those who died in WWII. Hanover Museum Located on Viljoen Street, in a farm house which the town was built around. The museum is home to artifacts dating back to pioneer days. House of Olive Schreiner The famous author lived here on Grace Street during the Anglo-Boer War. Hunting For hunting venues and more information, contact the local Tourist Information.
