Sutherland

Established in 1858 and named after Reverend Henry Sutherland. The town sits 1458 meters above sea level and boasts some of the clearest and darkest skies in the world, which is probably why Sutherland is home to the South African Astronomical Observatory. The town is also known for being one of the coldest in South Africa. Temperatures in winter range between -5ºC and 10ºC with summers ranging between 15ºC and 30ºC.
