Upington  
 


The town lies on the north bank of the Orange River and was named after Sir Thomas Upington, the first Attorney General of the Cape. It is rich in agriculture thanks to its well irrigated lands along the orange river. Upington experiences most of its rain in the summer, but has beautiful warm weather all year round, making it the perfect winter holiday destination

Augrabies Falls National Park
Covering an area of 820km2 and stretching along the Orange River, the scenic Augrabies Falls National Park is home to various animals, indigenous trees and the worlds 6th largest waterfall. The falls plummet 56 meters into the ravine and appropriately get their name from a khoi word which means ‘place of noise’.

Camel and Rider Statue, The
Stand in front of the police station, the statuepays tribute to the ‘mounties’ who patrolled the merciless desert territory on cammels.

Date Palm Avenue

Is the attractive entrance to Die Eiland Holiday Resort , it was declared a national monument in 1982. The palms were planted in 1935. The avenue of more than 200 date palms planted 9m apart is 1 041m long is one of the longest palm avenues in the Southern Hemisphere.

Dutch Reformed Church
Completed in 1911, is located on Schröder Street.

The Hortentia Windmill
Built in 1879 by Reverend Christian Schröder. It can be viewed from the bridge on the Groblershoop road.

Orange River Wine Cellars
A short drive from town into the industrial area will take you to the five-cellar co-operative, it is the biggest in the country and the 2nd biggest in the world!!! Wine tasting and tours are available. Tel: 054 337 8800.

Roman Catholic Church
Located on Le Roux Street. It was built in 1861 and renovated in 1947, it was made a national monument in1982.

Scotty Smith
George St. Leger Gordon Lennox, the former ‘Robin Hood’ of the Northern Cape who used to literally steel from the rich and give to the poor, died in Upington during the 1918 from a flu epidemic and is buried in the local cemetery.

Semiprecious Stones
Beautiful rainbow colored stones shaped by the ancient earth can be viewed at the Museum Office and in the foyer of the Oranje Hotel.

Located on the Louisville road. It is the most modern of its kind in the world, it is also the 2nd largest in the world.
